When does IT become a true business partner?

IT becomes a business partner the moment it starts owning outcomes, not just solutions. Said another way, stop talking about tools only and talk about how the tools will lead to a meaningful business outcome.

That means understanding how the balance sheet is built, understanding the go-to-market strategies, and how operational risk influences business success. In my experience, credibility is built when IT leaders can talk about trade-offs, timing, and impact in the same language as the business. Once this bridge is built, it is important to deliver against those commitments.

What does “value” really mean in IT?

Value isn’t solely about reducing costs or maximizing system uptime. If that's all you focus on, you will miss out on achieving true value. Real value is about enabling the business to operate with speed and confidence. Genuine IT value manifests as better decision-making, more predictable execution, and reduced risk during critical moments. The most effective technology organizations I’ve been part of prioritize being intentional over simply being busy—aligning investments with the outcomes that the business truly cares about.
